Skála in Rudolfinum

František Skála, a founding member of B.K.S. and Commander of the Order of the Green Ladybird, ranks amongst the most original creators in Czech visual art to have fundamentally departed from the well-worn clichés of ordinary artistic production over the last twenty years.

As a member of the “Stubborn society”, he very boldly drew attention to himself in the second half of the 1980s with installations whose poetry had its roots in the realm of nonsense, fiction, a flagrant disregard for context and primarily exclusive use of non-artistic materials. František Skála is a worthy successor to the lone figures of twentieth century art, an artist who has succeeded in finding adequate means of expressing what is in principle a poetic and romantic world view, considerably laced with a magical sense of irony, an artist of fantastic imagination and creativity. The exhibition to be held in the Galerie Rudolfinum shall not be based on an accumulation of already finished works – installations, objects, studies – in the form of a specific show, but rather shall be based on free play within the available space, on the possibility of applying his imagination in the form of a response to the architecturally exceptionally demanding arena of the gallery rooms, primarily in the form of spatial installations. It shall thus be a unique and unrepeatable creation for the genius loci of the Rudolfinum building, created specifically and only for this purpose, a “playground” of the free-association chain of this unique creator, making use of even the most bizarre materials.
