Art Sounds | Zhanna Kadyrova: UNEXPECTED

Enjoy the music between the exhibited works. Art Sounds is a new joint programme of Galerie Rudolfinum and the Czech Philharmonic in the Zhanna Kadyrova: UNEXPECTED exhibition.

On selected Tuesdays from 5 to 6 pm, you can experience a series of short musical performances by members of the Czech Philharmonic directly in the exhibition halls. Each performance is 10–13 minutes long. The repertoire freely responds to Zhanna Kadyrova’s exhibition and its themes and will be performed repeatedly on a given day. You have the opportunity to enjoy it several times in a row. Or you can opt for just one musical reflection and then move on through the exhibition.

Admission is free.

Tuesday, June 18:

Jan Holeňa and Dora Hájková Fidlitas Cello Duo

  • Programme:
    Dmitri Shostakovich: Prelude
Pablo Casals: The Song of the Birds
    Astor Piazzola: Oblivion
    Antonín Dvořák: Lasst mich allein
The Catalan song The Song of the Birds (El Cant del Ocells), which Pablo Casals used to play as a protest against the dictatorship of General Franco, has become a symbol of peace and understanding between peoples all over the world. Dmitri Shostakovich is known for his lifelong stance against fascism and Soviet oppression. Astor Piazzolla’s Oblivion is translated as “an expression of nostalgia, loss or sadness”. The interpretation of this piece expresses a reflection of the feelings caused by the war in Ukraine, such as grief, loss, and a longing for peace. Antonín Dvořák’s song Lasst mich allein or May my spirit be alone is a longing for home. It symbolises love that cannot be separated by death or the ocean. It ends with the phrase “Wish me peace”.
