Art Sounds | Zhanna Kadyrova: UNEXPECTED

Enjoy the music between the exhibited works. Art Sounds is a new joint programme of Galerie Rudolfinum and the Czech Philharmonic in the Zhanna Kadyrova: UNEXPECTED exhibition.

On selected Tuesdays from 5 to 6 pm, you can experience a series of short musical performances by members of the Czech Philharmonic directly in the exhibition halls. Each performance is 10–13 minutes long. The repertoire freely responds to Zhanna Kadyrova’s exhibition and its themes and will be performed repeatedly on a given day. You have the opportunity to enjoy it several times in a row. Or you can opt for just one musical reflection and then move on through the exhibition.

Admission is free.

Tuesday, May 21:

Luboš Dudek violin solo

  • Programme:
Ernest Bloch: Suite No.1 for solo violin
The work of the Swiss composer of Jewish origin reflects elements of Jewish liturgical and folk music. Suite No.1 for solo violin was composed in 1958. It was dedicated to Yehudi Menuhin, but premiered by Menuhin’s pupil Alberto Lysy, an Argentine violinist with Ukrainian roots living in Switzerland. The piece is structured in four movements without interruptions. The first movement, Prelude, is rhapsodic in character and moves mostly in G minor. The following Andante tranquillo is a monody with elements of atonality. The third movement, Allegro, in the key of E minor, reflects the inspiration of Bach’s solo sonatas. The episodic Andante in D minor is in a Baroque vein and forms a brief interlude before the final Allegro energico, which again returns to G minor and is considerably intertwined with the preceding Allegro in terms of motive. Indeed, this phenomenon is characteristic of the whole work. A reminiscence of the first movement still appears shortly before the end.
