Jiří Černický / Wild Dreams

Jiří Černický prepared for the Galerie Rudolfinum a specific project based on a series of more than fifty drawings and counting the same number of objects and installations, out of which more than a half was created solely for this exhibition. Environmental, social and para-scientific topics symptomatic for the artist oeuvre remain, however will appear in a shifted mode here – Jiří Černický thematises the encounters of high and low, predictable and unexpected. He allows for the interference of artefacts and environment, which enables us to see these as artefacts. We are permitted to look into the kitchen of a scientist, collector as well as a mad researcher, who is not afraid to make use of the living flesh. Whether pleasant, dark or wild, we never know exactly what the dream of Jiří Černický really means.

Jiří Černický (*Ústí nad Labem, 1966) confidently moves on the Czech art scene since the beginning of the nineties. Winner of the Jindřich Chalupecký Award, he currently heads the Studio of painting at the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague and works on projects with a number of professionals from different fields. The early nineties marked for Černický the period of performances. He became famous for his first project The First Serially Produced Schizophrenia (1998), the transformation of motorcycle helmets into the grimace of the wellknown painting The Scream by Munch. Jiří Černický specialises mainly in media such as painting, sculpture and multimedia installation, but also works in book illustration and music.
