about the exhibition

about the exhibition

A unique project by a Czech artist founded on the accentuation of one of the most significant symbols of Christianity located in an entirely neutral space. Jiří David intends to create on the roof of the Rudolfinum a bluish-glowing crown of thorns, made of neon-light tubes approximately twenty meters in diameter, which for two months ought to become one of the dominant features of the Prague townscape. The bold introduction of the familiar and coherent sacral motive into the world of contemporary Prague has rich social, emotional and spiritual implications. The project, moreover, will be implemented in the context of Bettina Rheims’s exhibition, maintaining nonetheless an entirely independent character as the creation of its author. It should also serve as a substantial contribution to the on-going debate on art in public spaces.
